Yelarbon meaning water lily which grows in a lagoon, is a rural township on the Cunningham Highway, 40 kilometres west of Inglewood and 50 kilometres east of Goondiwindi. Yelarbon is on the edge of Australia's most easterly Spinifix Desert and home to the "Desert Jewels" Biodiversity Walk and the Yelarbon Lagoon, a great habitat for waterbirds.
Yelarbon's desert and spinifex country is a geologically distinct area is characterised by a naturally occurring salinity scald, and this naturally hostile environment results in some unique vegetation and habitats, including spinifex grass (Triodia Scariosa). Many animals live in this harsh environment including seven species of frogs, seven species of reptiles, a species of native, mouse-sized marsupial and nearly 60 species of birds.
